Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 2 cans crushed tomatoes (28 oz)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1/2 cup beef stock
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped
  • 12 lasagna sheets
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the béchamel sauce:

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups milk
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the meat sauce: Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, and grated carrot. Cook until soft. Add the ground beef and pork, cooking until browned. Stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, red wine (if using), and beef stock. Simmer for 45 minutes. Add basil, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  • Make the béchamel sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add the flour and whisk for 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Simmer until thickened.
  • Assemble the lasagna: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large baking dish, layer meat sauce, lasagna sheets, béchamel sauce, and cheeses. Repeat the layers, finishing with a top layer of béchamel and cheese.
  • Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes until golden and bubbling. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, let the meat sauce simmer longer, up to 2 hours.
  • Fresh lasagna sheets can be used without pre-cooking.
  • Add a pinch of chili flakes for a little heat in the meat sauce.
