Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Cook the macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes until the mixture is smooth and bubbly.
  4. Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly, and cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and add cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Stir until the cheeses melt into a smooth sauce.
  6. Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat the pasta evenly.
  7. Transfer the macaroni mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  8. In a small bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs with melted butter. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the mac and cheese.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden and the edges are bubbly.
  10. Let it cool slightly before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

  • For extra creaminess, add a splash of heavy cream to the cheese sauce.
  • You can customize the cheese blend by incorporating gouda, gruyere, or Monterey Jack for a unique flavor.
  • If you prefer a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or some diced jalapeños.
