  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for ganache)
  • 8 oz dark chocolate (for ganache)
  • Chocolate shavings and sprinkles for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until well combined.
  • Stir in hot water until batter is smooth. Fold in chocolate chips.
  • Divide batter evenly between the cake pans and bake for 30–35 minutes.
  • Let cakes cool completely before assembling.
  • For ganache, heat heavy cream until hot but not boiling. Pour over chopped dark chocolate, let sit for 5 minutes, then whisk until smooth.
  • Spread ganache between cake layers and over the top.
  • Drizzle with extra ganache and top with chocolate shavings and sprinkles.
  • Let set before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For extra richness, use dark cocoa powder.
  • Can be made a day ahead and stored in the fridge.
  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for contrast.
